Pull Shapes upside-down bug?

Postby brynn on Wed, 10 Feb 2010 22:40:34 GMT

Hi Friends,
I'm posting this here instead of the Bugs forum, because I'm still fairly new to Alchemy, and not sure if I might have done something wrong. I've recently added several new files to my Shapes folder. 2 of them are "trees" made with Inkscape's Random Tree rendering extension. You can see them here, where I uploaded them to be shared in the Shape Exchange forum. (They are at the bottom of that page.)

Here is a screen shot that I prepared to show the problem. I turned off the Rotate feature, because I wanted the "trees" to look like trees, and not toppled over trees or...roots, I guess. But they are all displayed upside-down (looking more like roots than branches). It's probably hard to tell with the giant one, but those 2 smaller ones show what's happening.

Have I done something wrong somewhere, or is this some kind of bug?
Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it :D

PS -- In case it's a bug and you move this to that forum, I'm on Windows XP Home sp3, updated just a few minutes ago.

Yeah it looks like a bug.
Actually inside the code the shapes get flipped - strange thing is that the other default shapes come in ok after being flipped, i.e. right side up.
I guess the low-tech solution is to rotate the shapes in the PDF file :(

Do you think there is anything different about the PDF file?
Do you know of any other PDF files that exhibit this behavior?

Thanks by the way for creating all the neat content for Pull Shapes! Really appreciated!

Oh, you're welcome -- it was fun!

As far as I can tell, my spirogram files' objects are being rendered rightside-up. I have also, with the Rotate button turned off, checked the Leaves and Symmetry files (both found in that thread) and they are rendered rightside-up.

I can't think of anything about the PDFs that should cause this. When I made the original SVGs, I used Inkscape's "Fit page to selection" feature to automatically set the page size. That feature has been buggy in Inkscape, in certain situations (causing displacement of other things on the canvas -- displacement, but not rotation). So I suppose there could be some conflict there, between Inkscape and Alchlemy? I'm using Inkscape v 0.47, the last stable release, which is still fairly new, and I haven't checked to see if that bug has been fixed.

But again, I'm not sure if it could be the source of the problem or not, because I used it on all the files I've made, and only the "tree" files' objects are upside down. Oh, but maybe it's something with the Random Tree rendering extension? I guess I don't know much about extensions. And the spirograms are made with an extension as well, so maybe it's not the extension.

One of the "tree" files is in the Landscape orientation, and one is in the Portait orientation. But I don't know how that should cause the flipping of the objects (although I certainly know nothing about the inner workings of Alchemy).

So if I flip all the "tree" forms upside-down in my PDF files, should I also re-upload them? In other words, is this going to happen to everyone who uses the files I uploaded? Or is it a random kind of thing?

Any idea when or if this bug can be fixed?

Thanks for that, but it is really hard to say without looking at the actual coded contents of the PDF file.
There may be some slight difference that is causing it to be flipped.
But yeah, very strange.

In inkscape try path > stroke to path
