pen pessure ?

Postby NiME9 on Fri, 01 Aug 2008 04:24:11 GMT

Hi everyone! Got this quick little question that I couldn't answer myself in your wiki.. _

I might be totally off, but in the video of Andrew Jones, Isn't Pen Pressure Turned on ?

I'm asking because I got the feeling it had support for the penpressure on my wacom when I first tried it out, but when I spoke to some friends today who does also have Al.Chemy, they
gave me a big "Wtf are you talking about ??" when I mentioned Pen Pressure.

So I simply started this little awesome program out to find out that It was in fact NOT responding to my tablet as I originally thought it was...

Before Posting here I looked at the demo on the front page, and It does infact look like the software IS responding to whatever he is pressing that stylus hard or soft.

Thanks in advance!

Hey,

At the moment Alchemy doesn't use pen pressure.
It is however something we have been looking at for a while, just need to find a way to implement it.
Most likely it will be a feature of a specific module, and will respond in an chaotic alchemic way - rather than the usual mappings :)

If you have any ideas on how you would like to see it used, shout out.

Haha, alright, thanks for the clarification !

Not to be 'way' to random , the 'normal mapping' togheter with your current modules would totally rock , but If thats not on the menu, perhaps reversed pen pressure ( Presshard get Small line, touch little and get large shapes ;) ) would be cool ? I don't think theres that many 'cool things' you could do with penpressure without making it totally random *which would be kinda useless as if its random , it could as well be called random-size-on-your-shape'*

Ohwell, thanks, and good luck, i really hope to see penpressure in the sometime in the future,, its a great app already!

there's a lot of fun ways we could involve pen pressure : random selection from a vector library at a certain pressure mark. random tool selected and enacted at that mark. etc. would really enhance the chaotic element of alchemy. and offer some unusual results

My initial idea was just simple displacement of the pen location.
Something like a 3d like depth created by pressing harder could make for interesting shape creation.

Hmm, How about some periodic dispalcement function with Amplitude or frequency tied to pressure? Or some sort of circular drawing mode where radius or inverse radius length is attached to the pressure.

Opacity being pressure-bound would be neat just for the familiarity of it but maybe that goes against the purpose of the software.

If you keep track of pressure, P, in past instances like, for example, P(t-100), P(t-30), P(t-20), P(t-10) and use them as coefficients for size, displacement, opacity, color etc...that would make it a super-random randomizer! But another idea would be to simply use the past pressure instances to determine the current state and have that influence only one variable.

I agree, it would feel intuitive. Alternatively, making the shapes shrink as if in the distance.

Sorry if this is considered necro-posting, but either way, it's already on the first page... :P

Some background. Digital art is my hobby, and I'm the co-founder of a GFX forum. Soon, we will be releasing the first of our monthly resource packs, and today I downloaded Alchemy. I was immediately attracted to the shapes it created, especially the scrawls. Those are things I wouldn't ever be able to recreate, even if I had professional vector software like Illustrator. As it is now, Alchemy already provides great resources for GFX, but line weight based on pen pressure would make it heavenly. I'd love to see all these pressure-based distortions as well.
[Edit] Oh, I see this can be done using mic lines. It would still be nice if it was available for other lines.

Thanks for the comment.
We can definitely do that, but keep in mind it works a little bit different in the land of vector.
Keep an eye on this in the next version!

You could have pen pressure as one of the modules along with mirroring, call it pen pressure and have various sub options much in the same fashion as mirror can be both horizontal and verticle.
You could have:
1) Perspective (what Karl mentioned earlier with 3D perspective depending on pressure)
2) Like the speed module. Harder you press the further away from your curson it moves.
3) Pressure changes the hue or saturation of the colour chosen
4) Change transparency with pressure
5) Usual mapping (for those out there you want it but can be turned off for others)
6) other stuff lol

Just a though :)
