From lead into gold

Postby VelenoSangue on Wed, 08 Apr 2009 19:42:57 GMT

I'm doing alright with my art -- well enough to be employed at least, but I have a long way to go before I'll match the skill of the artists I admire (ex. Android Jones, Craig Mullins, Jason Seiler). I've been playing with alchemy a lot lately - it's a lot of fun to work with, and it seem to be helping me improve. So the question is, can I be turned from lead into gold, through alchemy? Cue reality show theme music.

Anyways, here is some of my recent work in Alchemy, sized down and arranged more compactly in photoshop.

Hey guys, I'm glad you like my work.

Here's some stuff from tonights alchemy session. Now that the eyedropper tool has a hotkey, I tried some more painting. I also had some fun with the pressure sensetive tool set to do just the outlines of the stroke. seems pretty good for making things like scales and somewhat rectilinear details. Sometimes good for fingers as well. Stuff done in photoshop was adding a little texture, and some color/contrast adjustments, and compacting the sketches into less pages.

Tonight I was working mostly with the shapes and pressure shapes tools. For the alien head painting, I found out that when using both the mirror and color switcher effects, it will pick a different random color for the stroke on each side. I think it's pretty useful for avoiding perfect symmetry.

Here's some more from the last few days. The first page is the result of playing with pull shapes, and making some of my own shapes to pull by using live trace on photos in illustrator. I might paint over some of these later. In the second and third pages, I'm mainly working on expressing poses with simple gestural silhouettes.

Gold indeed. Very inspiring work, man. I love the rough 2-tone ones best, they tell the whole story, show the whole scene, but keep it very dynamic and atmospheric. keep em coming, it's great to see what other people can make out of alchemy!
