From lead into gold

Sketches, artwork, and experiments using Alchemy

Hi Cdi3d,

When sketching at work I use a wacom cintiq 12wx (though for this sort of thing I generally use it more like a regular tablet), and when sketching at home I use a wacom bamboo since they're cheap and portable.

The wacom bamboo is more than enough if you're not going back and forth between programs, and want something for travel thats light and fits in a laptop case.

I've tried working with a mouse before, but I don't care for it much -- I find it slow and inaccurate, and I definately miss the pressure sensitivity you get with a tablet -mice make blending and line variation much harder.

Wait, wait!! Wha? These were all done in Alchemy?!? I can draw, but I can't get anything *close* to this using Alchemy. I was under the impression Alchemy was designed for generating random shapes, etc. Could you please post some sort of tutorial on your settings, etc?

FanTAStic work, btw!!!

Thanks Gnaws, Demon,

I know its a couple months late replying ot this, but my main process for the pure black and white ones is to block out a rough silouhette, then block in the bright areas, then do a lot of cross hatching to add in detail. I mainly use the pressure brush, and hit x all the time to switch between FG and BG color. Since alchemy is vector based, it can't do pressure opacity, so all blending is done using transparency and hitting i for the eyedropper tool.

Basically, the way to get good is to practice all the time (carry a sketchbook and draw when waiting for anything). If your boyfriend/girlfriend isn't complaining that you draw too much, you aren't doing it enough. ;)

Here is some more recent stuff I've been doing:

Thanks. I think I'm a lot better than when I started messing around with alchemy. It's definitely made me a lot more comfortable working in black and white.

A bit more for this month:

WOW!

I love your sketches, but i especially love the houses and environment sketches that are on the first page!
I didn't even know such results could be achieved using this program!
O___O wow, just blew my mind.

Request, video tutorial of house/environment?
