Is anyone else doing this???
I've VJed 2 Brown University parties and its been going well. I want to know if anyone else vjs this way:
So there are shortcuts for every module. I have them all set on the buttons and wheel of my wacom tablet, but you could just as easily set them on the keyboard.
For instance:
Set Pull Shapes to P and set pressure shapes to R.
I'll use "Massage Situation" by Fying Lotus as an example. k is the snare, t is the high hat.
It goes "mmmhh t-k-t-t--t-k-t- aaaaah t-k-t-t-t-k--t"
so for the "mmmhh" I would press R and do a waving motion in and out to the beat, (also I'm in Displace so I'm basically drawing the moving beat and capturing the up and down flow.)
and for the "aaah" I'd press P without even picking up my pen and the shapes will explode into pullled shapes. Then I pick up my pen and start over for the next "mmmh"
you can do this between any two modules. I play around with Mic shapes, Speed Shapes, and X Shapes, just pick a sound for a shape, and then when the sound changes or transitions, press another shortcut and its relatively seamless. I feel like a DJ spinning my Tablet wheel. I try to use my best judgement on what modules feel right for what insturment or sound.
(btw my settings are almost always Vector shapes, mirror vertical+horizontal, limit set to 4, color switch on, usually displacement.)
Is anyone else working pretty much the same way? I'd love to start a dialogue about making this style of set as seamless and entertaining as possible.
