Unfortunately Alchemy relies upon the java virtual machine and java language to run. Which as far as I know are not supported on the I-phone/I-pad OS/s.

If you don't understand that I can make it simpler and in plainer words. See the I-pad and I-phone only speak a rare dialect of Swahili, and require another intermediary to speak to pretty much anything. Java is a rare dialect of Saxony and Latin and thus also requires the use of a translator(The JVM) to be spoken by anyone else. Moreover the I-pad is a very important person and will only allow certain people to talk to him or translate for him, people who have been approved by his PR team Apple co. So to speak to the I-phone you first must get apple to approve the java translator and then to approve the alchemy app itself. The JVM as far as I know has not been ported because it violates one of the rules set by Apple. It can't talk to or grab other things from the internet, which is kind of required for a fully featured JVM and running of most java apps. Thus alchemy could not be ported to the I-pad simply for lack of a translator to talk to the I-pad.

Thanks for the enlightening description!
That is indeed the case.

I might add that while the hardware platform is very enticing, the greater development environment is pretty restrictive with a number of hoops you need to jump through to even test an application on the device. One of them being paying a development fee to Apple to develop and distribute free software.

I wonder if we will see a decent Android tablet?

Thanks for that!
I didn't realize there was so much out there...

I have a Tablet PC that I got for the purpose of Alchemy development, but it was pretty disappointing.
One thing was that your hand always gets in the way to obscure the canvas. The other thing is the feeling of the pen touching the hard surface of the display, like drawing on glass with no friction.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who has spent some hours drawing with their finger on a touch screen.
Not just occasional drawing, but really using it for a long session.
I imagine there would be some issues with sensation (or loss of) in your finger tips.
And also I wonder how it feels like to draw on such a surface, unlike the pen there is quite a lot of friction.

That's a shame. I do a lot of drawing on the Ipad, using the Pogo Sketch stylus for percision work. I also use a Motion Computing LE1700 tablet, running XP for concept art and figure drawing. I pretty much only use Alchemy for figure drawing now. I'd love to use the Ipad to do figure drawing in Alchemy.

In truth, after using all the modules in Alchemy, these days I only use Shapes, Speedshapes and Gradient. Those tools, plus a good color picker is enough. The vector nature of Alchemy, while cool, is just too buggy and I always save off .jogs instead.

So an App for the iPhone/iPad that mimics Shapes, Pullshapes, and Gradient without the need for vector, seems pretty doable, even if it means not having it be Java.

As for cost to develop on the iPhone, that's like 100$, right? Charge .99$ and you'll recoup that cost in a day.

In any case, I love Alchemy, and I'll keep using it on my PCs.

I've been interested in using alchemy on a mobile device for some time now, I have it on my netbook for when I do my live art presentations for a while, but I'd like a more portable option for more spontaneous moments as well. In an optimal sense I'd port it to iPhone os myself and be able to project it as well, but I've been unable to learn me any coding skills thus far. However, I'd like to know if alchemy would work for an ARM processor device like the one featured at open-pandora.org . It's not as big a screen but I think it might work well in a pinch, and I already have one ordered!

Tl;dr: blah blah blah, does alchemy work on ARM?

JVM works on ARM IIRC, so alchemy should work. Key word is "should," all JVM versions are different, so you could end up with it not working there.

Sweet, and if ti doesn't work there is no shortage of enthusiastic coders looking to port any program they can get their hands on. Thank you.
