Looks amazing.
How is it made in real life?

You can buy bottles of ink at art supply stores to use with quill pens and brushes. Then you can set it out for a while to let it get darker as the water evaporates, or you can add some more water to it to do lighter ink washes.

As much as I would like to create such a feature, it is most-likely impossible to do in a vector based application :(

For digital watercolors or chinese ink painting there is MoXi
About those illustrations, perhaps the artist programmed a kick ass fluid simulator, but I think he used photo samples of ink drops in water, then composed and painted over in Painter. Pretty much like Andrew Jones uses Alchemy sometimes.

Thanks for the post, that Moxi looks quite cool.
I respect the amount of work people in academia put into such things, but always wonder why they try and 'digitalise' existing 'real'
techniques?
I quite like the work of Cai Guo-Qiang, who uses the burn marks from gunpowder to create patterns on canvas.

Maybe someone will soon try and simulate this?

Whatever their reasons are, from an ecologic/anti-materialistic point of view I'm glad they do it, so a lot of people like me don't have to waste a lot stuff like paper and ink (and sometimes ugly chemicals) to achieve certain results.

For sure. It is also very messy :)
But on the flip side, there is a pretty big C02 hit from using computers/=& the internet too.
It always seems kinda magical to use Google and get instant search results, but the reality is they have whole warehouses full of servers pumping out heat 24/7 :(

I guess I am interested in, well this project is interested in, exploring the things you can't do in the analogue world. Which means developing something new and native to the digital realm.

Hey directed the opening 'footprints' fireworks sequence to the Olympics actually - you know the one that was not actually broadcast live.
