Exporting often

Postby Shviller on Mon, 30 Mar 2009 10:48:07 GMT

Hello, everyone.

I'm not an artist, and using Alchemy feels a lot like hammering nails with a microscope for me (Create:Type, Affect:Mirror is pretty much all I'm using for now). But nonetheless I can say that Alchemy is great, and the whole idea of experimenting with sketch creation is awesome.

However, I have one small nitpick. You see, I prefer to save my doodles with meaningful filenames. As far as I can tell, the only way to achieve that is exporting rather than saving. However, Export dialog always starts on my desktop, and since I'm exporting quite often, navigating each time to the folder I want my stuff to be saved in is a bit annoying. I went as far as customizing the My Places bar to include the folder I'm saving my Alchemy stuff to, only do discover that Alchemy ignores that and shows the default folder no matter what.

It's a minor issue, but maybe it's worth looking into?

Edit: Nevermind, My Places seem to be working now. I don't know what was wrong, but for some time it didn't work in Alchemy but worked anywhere else.

If you have a look here in the Preferences/Options there is an option to set the session file name:

As far as the Export thing goes, it would be good to remember the last place a file was saved then?

Thanks for the reply, Karl!

I did notice that I can set the folder for sessions, but while useful (vital, even) that feature doesn't help in my case much. That My Places trick helped, though - now my Alchemy folder is just 1 click away at all times.

Yes, I think remembering the last folder used for Export will be useful, since Export serves more as Save As.

Just to be clear, the name and formatting of the session file can be set as well as the folder.
But it is probably not so much use if you want to hand name every time.

Yeah, I noticed. By the way, do you think it would useful to preserve the settings the user had last used? Transparency, color, modules used, and so on. I'd like to have it, but I'm not sure that such a feature fits with your vision of Alchemy, the purpose it is supposed to be used for... I'm using Alchemy in a kind of continuous way: I doodle a bit, then close it, and when I return to it I continue right where I left off, rather than start something different, so Alchemy keeping all the settings I last used instead of setting things up anew would be nice (although by no means necessary). I'm not sure anyone else would want to use it in this manner, though, so there's probably no need to bother implementing it.
