I'm also having this problem, it worked for a couple of days then i was given the "Uncaught exception in main method: java.lang.NullPointerException:"

i've followed your instructions, I'm running Alchemy Alpha 005 version. On Mac OSX 10.5.5 Using JAVA 1.5.0_16

Thanks for getting back so quick.
I tried the new version,
aaand no error messages!

though, an i don't know if it was my settings or something
but when it first loads up after installing no canvas appears,
i had to close the toolbar (it appeared detached as a separate palette)
and that brought up the canvas
incase it happens to anyone else.
other than that it seems to be working v smoothly.

Regarding the missing canvas...
Does your setup have a single monitor or two?
Alchemy remembers the last location of the window, but it might have gotten a little confused with the newer version.
There will likely be quite a few changes in the final 006 release, so definitely upgrade when that comes out.

I have a single monitor, but it may have been something i did not too sure, but it wasn't anything major so shouldn't worry too much.
either way other than that first canvas thing its fine.
i love this app!

I fixed this issue reading the "ReadMe.txt":

... make sure the path to Alchemy does not contain any non-standard
characters such as the exclamation mark (!), this has been known to cause problems
launching the application...

Find the preferences file. it is an xml file located under library/application support/alchemy on your start up volume (where Alchemy is installed). Delete it, and Alchemy will start up for you no problem. I've had to do it three times but it works every time. It's a great little app, it would be a shame for this to stop folks from using it.
