Pen strangeness on Dell XT Tablet PC...

Postby maharg on Fri, 15 Jan 2010 03:09:25 GMT

Hi,
I'm a new user and first time poster. I simply love alchemy and the idea behind it! It would be even better if alchemy didn't have this one issue on my machine. When I start drawing with the pen, the line only starts drawing after a second of moving the pen at which it always draws a straight line from where I placed the pen to where the pen currently is when the line starts to follow the pen. That sounds confusing. What happens is if I draw a spiral, the first second or so of that spiral is a straight line then it spirals normally. It doesn't matter if I hold the pen for a second before moving or not. I tried updating to the latest jpen lib but that didn't help.

I'm running windows 7 pro 64 bit with java 1.6.0_17 32bit on a dell xt tablet pc.

Strangely enough, this obscure bug has come up before:
bugs/topic59-10.html#p236

Thanks to andrea.bianco for that 'fix' :)

(sigh) I was so excited to see your post but my "press and hold" was turned off already :( I messed with a bunch of options in the control panel but none of them helped. Thanks for your reply though, the problem described was exactly the same as my problem. The only difference is that my tablet is not a wacom tablet but an n-trig tablet.

Yeah, that is a super annoying problem I can imagine.

Its probably one of those bugs that you would report to Sun (the Java people) and they would point the finger at N-Trig and vice versa.
It is also the problem of not being reproducible without specific computer hardware.

So, I am sure you have tried this already. But maybe a driver update?
Other than that I would get in touch with N-Trig support. Best case scenario they will fix it in the future. Worst case... finger pointing :(

I would also add, if you do report the bug to N-Trig.
Try and find a major application, or several other smaller ones that share the same problem.
It seems Skype Sketchpad also is a problem? bugs/topic59-10.html#p307
Not sure if that is Java based or not.

Thanks for all your help. I suspect it is a java thing since it does work in other apps like sketchpad, artrage, GIMP and Paint.net. I will try to test and verify that it is a java side problem and get a hold of sun and n-trig either way. Thanks for all your help. I still get a lot of good use out of alchemy regardless so I'm still happy with it.

Thanks,
James

You also need to switch off pen flicks.

Hello,
I originally started this post and since then n-trig has released more drivers and even a wintab api driver but I still get this issue. However, I'm not so sure it's a tablet digitizer issue. I get the same behavior when using just my trackpad and even mouse. Any ideas? I have Java 1.6 installed. None of my other art programs does this.
