Mac OS X crash on launch

[Marcello]

Alchemy 008 crashes every time on launch (007 did as well) on my macbook.

I installed it by dragging the Alchemy folder from the mounted dmg to /Applications/ (though it also happens if I copy the folder to my home directory).

Console only shows me two entries:

Hey Karl,

I don't think that's the issue, because I've never once been able to successfully run Alchemy. I don't see any .alchemy or similar folder in my home directory.

I have Java 1.6.0_17. I also installed Java 1.4.2_21 and 1.5.0_19 on Snow Leopard using this technique. But looking now, it looks like some Apple Java update overwrote my symlinks and made 1.4/1.5 symlink to Java 1.6.

I fixed the symlinks and now Alchemy starts fine. Is Alchemy relying on Java 5 or 32bit? On Java preferences the version order is set to:
Java SE 6 64bit
Java SE 6 32bit
J2SE 5.0 64bit
J2SE 5.0 32bit
J2SE 1.4.2 32bit

(for both applets and applications)

Well it used to be that we would only run in 1.5, due to the pen library not supporting anything more than that.
Now, and I just checked, it seems we can support 1.6.

If you continue to have problems, another thing you can do is to change the Java/JVMVersion value in Alchemy.app/Contents/Info.plist

1.5+ and 1.6+ both work for me (but so did 1.5* after I fixed the symlinks for java 1.4.2/1.5.0), though I don't have my tablet at the moment to test out the pressure support.

JPen should work fine on Java 5 and 6 (intel 32bit and 64bit, as well as ppc 32bit, but I don't know if ppc 64bit is supported).

Marcello, it just now clicked to me who you are - welcome to the Alchemy forum
I have to say an extra thanks for all the hard work you put into the JPen release.

1.5+ & 1.6+ would both be running Java 6, whereas 1.5* would be 1.5.
So I am guessing that the symlinks were causing a problem with 1.5.

I imagine that is an issue that more people will be facing so I am going to switch over to 1.5+.
Everything seems to be working with that setting on my setup as well (10.5.8).

The new Alchemy crashes on launch for me as well. The previous (007) still works fine. I don't know much about Java or Java settings so if you could give me some simple walk through how to make it work I would appreciate it.
I have Mac OSX 10.4.11.
The message I get every time I try to run Alchemy 8 is:
"The application Alchemy quit unexpectedly.
Mac OS X and other applications are not affected.
Click reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple"

... and nothing happens after that.

I would really like to try the new Alchemy. Thank you.

I'm not positive JPen is compatible with Mac OS X 10.4.x. I have no way to test it and I believe we're using some 10.5.x features to access the tablet. Do you have a tablet, did it ever work with Alchemy?

(Granted, JPen shouldn't crash, I would expect Mac OS X to simply not load a library that isn't supported by the OS version, but that doesn't seem to be the case.)

If the tablet is the problem, you should be able to remove the JPen library and everything -bar the pen pressure in Pressure Shapes- should work.

Right click on the Alchemy application and choose "Show Package Contents", and navigate to Contents/Resources/Java.
Look for the "libjpen-2-3.jnilib' file and move that to the desktop or somewhere.
Start the application and see if it runs.

It is possible to release an Alchemy 10.4.x version with the 090522 release that runs on Java 5.
It is not so easy to debug on older mac os's.
